WHO REALLY *NEEDS* A CHEMICAL PEEL ANYWAY?

September is here which means only one thing in the world of beauty: the start of chemical peel season! For some, chemical peels can be the only luxury splurge beauty consumers allow themselves to make each year. For others, chemical peels are an absolute necessity to achieving their skin care goals. So who needs a peel and why? What is the difference between getting just a chemical peel vs. a chemical peel series? How many different types of chemical peels are there? Lucky for you, we have the answers to all of these questions below!

WHO NEEDS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

There are two types of people who need a chemical peel: people with active skin concerns (think acne, hyperpigmentation, scarring, etc.) and people who want to wake up glowing, every single day of the year. This might sound like literally everyone! But a skilled esthetician knows the difference. There are some people who, unfortunately, are unable to handle chemical peels. People with some forms of atopic dermatitis, diabetes, psoriasis, renal or hepatic disease, herpes, cancer, and being pregnant and/or breastfeeding are just a few conditions that wouldn't be suitable for any type of chemical peel procedure.

If there aren't any contraindications present, then chemical peels can be a great solution for all skin types when tailored to individual needs. At GLOWDEGA®, we don't take a one peel fits all approach. We have taken the extra steps to consult with our labs and peel providers to be sure we can create effective, custom treatments for our clientele.

Peel series are also perfect for those who consider themselves low maintenance. You get results quickly and don't have to do a lot of monthly upkeep, your day-to-day routine is enough.

WHY CHEMICAL PEELS?

Chemical peels are advanced exfoliating treatments designed to improve the skin's appearance by using an acid solution to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the regeneration of new, healthier skin. The process enhances skin texture, tone, and overall clarity while addressing specific concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, scarring, and sun damage. One of the biggest advantages of chemical peel procedures is the acceleration of cell turnover. As we age, this process moves slower and what used to take around 28 days can start taking 45+ days to complete. This means it can take even longer for breakouts to clear, hyperpigmentation to fade, and gives scars/fine lines/wrinkles the chance to permanently settle into the skin. Chemical peels speed up this process and help to prevent this.

At the same time, the acids in a chemical peel create a controlled, superficial injury to the skin which triggers the skin’s natural healing response. This prompts increased collagen and elastin production—two essential proteins responsible for skin's firmness and elasticity. As a result, the skin repairs itself with new cells that are more even in tone, smoother, and healthier-looking.

After a chemical peel, the skin goes through a healing process where the outer layer sheds, revealing new, regenerated skin. This post-peel phase can involve redness, peeling, and some downtime, depending on the peel's depth. As the skin heals, it appears smoother, brighter, and more youthful.

Over time, repeated treatments, particularly in a series, amplify these effects, gradually enhancing skin firmness, reducing acne breakouts, evening out skin tone, and softening fine lines and scars. Proper post-peel care, including sun protection and moisturizing, is crucial to maintaining and maximizing the results of a chemical peel.

SINGLE CHEMICAL PEEL VS. CHEMICAL PEEL SERIES

A single chemical peel can give your skin a quick boost, improving tone and texture almost immediately. It's perfect if you're looking for a quick refresh or prepping for a special event when you want your skin to look its best. However, the results from just one peel are usually short-term and mainly on the surface. It's rare that a single chemical peel will give you the results you are looking for.

For deeper and longer-lasting results, a series of chemical peels is the way to go. With multiple sessions spaced out over a few weeks, your skin gradually adapts, and the benefits build up with each treatment. This approach allows the peel to work on deeper layers, tackling more persistent issues like stubborn acne, noticeable dark spots, and fine lines. Over time, a series of peels offers more dramatic improvements, promoting healthier skin and a lasting transformation.

HOW MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF PEELS ARE THERE?

There are literally hundreds (maybe thousands?) of chemical peels on the market. Some good, some not so good. At GLOWDEGA®, we use 15 different peels in our treatment rooms. Because we customize peel sessions with each of our clients, no two peel sessions are alike! We also do a thorough consultation before we begin any peel series with our clients to ensure the most effective results.

We primarily use peels that incorporate the following acids: mandelic, azelaic, lactic, glycolic, pyruvic, kojic, trichloracetic, tranexamic, salicylic, tartaric, and shikimic. We also have peel blends that incorporate retinol, vitamin c, caffeine, glutathione, and phenol.
